With a fierce roar Belial leaped forward, his sword coming up before him. The tip of the blade cut through the assassin’s leather armour as though it were cheesecloth and sank to the hilt in unresisting flesh. Richard’s face was blanked by surprise. He blinked at the red tip of the sword that had killed his assailant. Belial retracted the sword and it came away with a fleshy tearing sound. The soldier’s body fell and Richard took one long step to his left, out of the dead man’s path of descent. Belial’s head whipped back and forth, quickly looking for more assassins. It was only when he was sure that the danger had passed that he turned back to Richard, his sharp eyes staring into his friend’s.

“Richard,” his voice was like the steel of his sword, “I told you to be careful! Why did you leave my sight?!”

Richard gave Belial an unamused look and the soldier struggled to rein himself in.

“That is unimportant, Belial. What is important,” He pointed to the body at his feet, “there are infiltrators in my city. This will not do. Take your knighthood and sweep the city.”

Belial went to attention and saluted, “Yes my king. Let me accompany you to the castle first, Sir.”

Richard nodded but didn’t move. Instead he was looking down at his cape.

“Sir?” Belial asked, but he got no response from the King. “Sir…why…did you leave the escort?”

Richard looked up at Belial and then back down. After a moment his hand appeared from under the cape and moved it aside. Belial’s brows rose in surprise at the sight of the very small child that had apparently hidden herself under the king’s cape and was now clinging to his leg.

“Sire…”

“She was crying.”

Belial stared at his sovereign. How had the man even heard the sound of a child crying over the wheels of the carriage, the tramping of horses’ hooves, and the rattle of swords and armour? The king carefully removed himself from the child’s grip and bent to pick her up. She still looked scared, but allowed Richard to lift her from the ground and balance her against his side.

Belial felt his chest warm and a smile tugged at his mouth, “Shall we search for her parents, Sire?”

Richard nodded.

Belial let out a soft sigh and saluted again, “Yes my king.”
