Survivor's Guilt

Belial opened his eyes. His vision was blurry. He wanted to lift his hands to his face but his body disagreed. His abdomen was sore and tightly bound. His chest was similarly bound and his ribs ached. His head was sore both inside and out. He flexed his hands, both seemed intact, but he was just too tired to lift either arm. He felt clammy and he smelled none too good.

So he was alive then.

The man groaned. Richard. Belial’s vision was clearing and he was remembering now. Richard. Belial had been stabbed on the field and then beaten in front of his king. Richard. The king had fought vainly against his captors in his desperation to save Belial. Richard. His king’s name was a mantra in his head. Richard.

Richard had been captured by the enemy. Belial had failed Richard. Richard was now at the mercies of his enemies. Belial closed his eyes and wished hed hadn’t survived.

Silent Tears

A stinging pressure built under Belial’s closed eyelids. His jaw clenched against the wet sob that built up in the back of his throat. It forced its way out as a strangled, glottal cluck. Hot tears trickled from his eyes. The crying hurt nearly as much as knowing his king would soon die. His cracked ribs ached with the sobs he suppressed, but he could not quell the emotion that overtook him. His pain went deeper than that. His Richard, his king, he hadn’t been able to protect his king. He wept silently until finally merciful darkness claimed his mind.
